JOB TITLE:  Special Education Transportation Assistant

HOURS: 30 hours per week (6.0 hours per day, average/split shift am and pm) - this position may be split into two 3.0 hour positions depending on interested applicants.

REPORTS TO:  Director of Special Services

 

JOB SUMMARY: This position assists the bus driver with loading, unloading and student management on the school bus with a goal of providing safe and supportive transportation for students, with a focus on students with disabilities. The Special Education Transportation Assistant works closely with the bus driver and school staff to meet the individual needs of each student, creating a positive respectful and inclusive environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Criminal history clearance (background check and HB 2062).
  3. Ability to climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17.5 inches.
  4. Ability to quickly exit an emergency door opening of 24 by 48 inches and at least 42 inches from the ground.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Basic computer/technology skills.
  2. Spanish language skills.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Create a positive educational environment for students on the bus.
  2. Learn and adapt to students’ medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  3. Assist students with special needs in safely boarding and exiting the bus, including operating lifts, securing wheelchairs, and using other assistive devices.
  4. Provide students with constructive behavioral and disciplinary direction.
  5. Ensure that all passengers are in appropriate safety restraints systems when applicable.
  6. Prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Works a school year calendar, approximately 181.5 days at FTE 0.75 split shift am/pm.  This position may be split into two 3.0 hour positions depending on interested applicants.  Based on current OSEA salary schedule and negotiated agreement, salary (code 8 – starting $18.03/hr. – $20.82/hr. with excellent benefits including Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance and Oregon state retirement).
